Earwax is a normal, protective substance, and most ears clear it naturally. When it builds up and blocks the canal, it can cause muffled hearing, a blocked or full feeling, earache, ringing or itching. Hearing aids, earplugs, narrow ear canals and cotton buds make buildup more likely.
Irrigation isn't suitable in every case, so please tell us before booking if you have had a perforated eardrum, ear tubes or ear surgery, or currently have ear pain, discharge or an infection.
If your symptoms continue after cleaning, there may be another cause worth looking into, and we'll advise on next steps. Sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, bleeding or discharge from the ear, or dizziness with a change in hearing need prompt medical assessment rather than routine ear cleaning.

When carried out by trained professionals after an ear examination, it is a commonly used method of removing earwax. As with any procedure there are small risks, such as temporary dizziness, ear irritation and, rarely, injury to the eardrum or infection. That is why we check your ears and history first.
Most people find it comfortable. You may notice noise, mild pressure or a brief feeling of dizziness during the procedure. Tell our team straight away if you feel any pain so they can pause and check.
Irrigation is generally not suitable if you have a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, a history of ear surgery, or active ear pain, discharge or infection. Let us know about any of these before your visit so we can advise on the safest approach for you.
This is not recommended. Cotton buds tend to push wax deeper into the canal and can irritate or injure the ear. Ear candles are also not recommended, as they are not an effective way to remove wax and can cause burns. If you think wax is affecting your hearing, it is safer to have your ears checked.
Blocked or muffled hearing, a full feeling, earache, ringing or itching can all be caused by earwax, but they can also have other causes, so it's best not to assume. Our team will examine your ears and tell you what they find.
There is no set schedule. Many people never need their ears cleaned, because ears usually clear wax by themselves. People who wear hearing aids or earplugs, or who are prone to buildup, may need it from time to time. Have them checked if symptoms return.
